Limited semester plan upsets private colleges

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

Jan 24, 2015-

Private College Association of Nepal, an umbrella organisation of private colleges in Kathmandu Valley, has expressed serious concern over the decision of the Tribhuvan University (TU) to run semester system only in three faculties.

The association of 36 private colleges, offering master’s level education, has said that they had already made a huge investment in line with the previous decision. The latest TU decision has risked their investment, according to the association.

After the pressure from various student unions, a meeting of the TU’s office bearers on Monday announced to conduct  the semester system in only Science, Law and Public Administration streams. Rajendra KC, chairman of the association, said all 36 colleges had applied to run master’s programme for Management and English studies under the semester system.

The TU had raised Rs 30,000 each from these colleges for the feasibility study. After securing the approval, the colleges had also conducted orientation classes on December 26 and 27. The latest decision has created confusion among the college operators.

Hari Singh KC, the association’s member, claimed that millions of rupee has already been invested. He demanded the TU to allow the semester system for other disciplines as well. The association has threatened to move the Supreme Court if the TU does not allow them to run their classes under the semester system.

The TU is preparing to hold a tripartite meeting with the student unions and the association to resolve the issue.

On December 17, 2013, the TU Executive Council had decided to introduce semester system in all 32 central departments and gradually expand the programme across the country. As per the plan, the TU had decided to replace the annual system in all the colleges in the Valley this year and the rest of the TU colleges by next year.
