Pipe, road works to go in tandem

Feb 10, 2015-

Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) will install water pipeline for Melamchi Water Supply Project along the roads inside Kathmandu Valley that are currently undergoing improvement works before it takes the project to the areas where the roads were recently widened and black-topped.

The plan, according to KUKL, is not to dig up the roads that were completed recently.

At the initial phase of the project, KUKL will lay the water pipeline network along the roads that are presently undergoing construction works. To that end, it is working in close coordination with the road authority, KUKL said in a statement on Tuesday.

KUKL has said that the water pipeline would be installed under the pavement so as not to hamper the roads. Pipeline will be installed on the either side of the road, which could cause inconveniences for pedestrians and roadside building owners in particular. Meanwhile, KUKL has announced to begin the pipeline installation works along the Chabahil-Mahankal Chaur and the Jorpati-Aarubari roads.

The Melamchi Water Supply Project is expected to end the drinking water shortage in Kathmandu Valley by ensuring proportional distribution of water and reducing leakages.

The project has dedicated 77 km area for Bulk Distribution System that will have pipes ranging from 500mm to 1,400 mm to withstand the water pressure. Six water reservoirs, with the capacity of 65,000 cubic metres, are also being constructed.
