Alleged irregularities at 40 community forests
Mar 5, 2015-
Complaints about alleged financial irregularities have been lodged against 40 community forests operating in Bardiya district since mid-April last year. A total of 177 cases have been lodged against the community forests in mid-western region, among which Bardiya’s community forests have grabbed the top spot with most number of cases lodged against them.
Similarly, Surkhet is ranked second as per the number of cases filed against community forests operating there.
The Commission for Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA), which has already initiated investigation into the alleged irregularities, stated that they have already investigated into eight of the 40 cases of irregularities against community forests in Bardiya.
According to CIAA’s regional office, most of the complaints were regarding the lack of transparency in the sale and distribution of forest products, the tendency of forest officials giving donations to educational institutions and their failure to reveal the source of such donations.
Last year, the officials at the local Kisaan Community Forest had declared to provide donations amounting to Rs 2.1 million during a ‘Mahayagya’ organised to raise funds to upgrade a school in Dhodari VDC into a technical school.
