Bhandari wins amateur chess

LALITPUR: Chhitiz Bhandari of Kavre clinched the third National Amateur Chess Championship on Saturday. Bhandari held Bikash Kuluju of Bhaktapur in the final round to end the championship with 7.5 points  from nine rounds and book a ticket to the World Amateur Chess Championship which will be held in Greece in April. He also received a reward of Rs 20,000. Kuluju finished second with seven points. (PR)

Tennis players off to Bangkok

KATHMANDU: A 3-member lawn tennis team left for Bangkok to participate in the ITF 14 and Under Asian Junior Tennis Championship on Saturday. Samrakshyak Bhusan Bajracharya and Anne Mathema are the two players and Yana Mathema the team manager. The championship is scheduled for March 16-27. (PR)

Fawcett wins opening edition

KATHMANDU: Brian Fawcett scored seven-under 65 to win the opening edition of the Surya Nepal Goakarna Monthly Medal on Saturday. Fawcett, playing with 13 handicap, also wont he gross title carding six-over 78. Due to one player one prize rule, he chose to take the gross prize. Bijay Bahadur Shrestha, who was among the three tied at even-par 72, was declared the nett winner. Aditi Ghimire scored three-under 69 nett to win the junior trophy. (PR)
