Khanal stars in Bhairahawa win

Mar 17, 2015-

A fine all round performance from Saurav Khanal spurred Region 4 Bhairahawa to a four-wicket win over Region 9 Dhangadi in the Senior One Day National Cricket Tournament on Tuesday.

In the Group ‘B’ match at the Pulchowk Engineering College grounds, Khanal took three wickets as Bhairahawa restricted Dhangadi for 227-9. Bhairahawa had five of their batsmen back in the pavilion with just over 100 runs but Khanal combined for a century stand with Antim Thapa  to  make 229-6 in 47.3 overs.

Thapa and Khanal lifted Bhairahawa from 105-5 in 25.2 overs with a 104-run stand for the sixth wicket. Khanal scored 53 off 66 with six fours and a six. Thapa did the rest with an unbeaten innings of 101-ball 68 that included seven hits to the fence. Nirmal Thapa (29) and Faizal Khan (19) had a 50-run partnership for the second wicket from the top order. Lalit Singh Bhandari took 3-39, while Ravi Bhatt claimed two.

Dhangadi didn’t have big contributors with the bat but still managed to cross 200-run mark with a collective effort. Dipendra Chand and Prakash Thapa (27) pulled off the best partnership for them with a 65-run stand for the third wicket. Chand made 37 off 51 with six boundaries. Apart from Khanal, Bishnu Pandey also grabbed three wickets.

In an inconsequential Group ‘A’ match at the TU grounds, a rare big innings from Karan KC gave Region 8 Pokhara an 89-run win over Region 7 Janakpur. Both teams were already out of the tournament. Tribhuvan Army Club and Region No 2 Birgunj have already made it to the semi-finals from the group.

KC lifted Pokhara to a huge 272-6 scoring a quick fire 89 runs. Janakpur, in reply, were bundled out for just 183 runs in 41.2 overs. Hari Shankar Sah top scored for Janakpur with 58 off 62 hitting 11 boundaries. Sah’s 56-run stand for the third wicket with Raj Mohammad (16) was the only bright spot for Janakpur.  Sushil Kandel grabbed 4-32 for Pokhara while Santosh Upadhyaya took 3-22.

KC smashed nine boundaries and five sixes in his whirlwind knock while facing just 55 deliveries. Bidhan Shrestha  was Pokhara’s next best scorer with 36 runs.
