Dish Media to lead cable TV digitisation

With the government adopting a policy to digitise cable television, Dish Media Network on Friday said it would lead the campaign.
The annual general meeting (AGM) of the company on Friday decided to lead the digital transmission campaign across the country in collaboration with cable operators.
Dish Media plans to include domestic cable operators as partners, or agents. “We have taken this decision as per the government policy to digitise cable network transmission inside the Kathmandu valley by 2015 and gradually to other municipalities and VDCs,” said Devi Prakash Bhattachan, newly elected chairman of Dish Media.
“Digital transmission has become a must for high quality visuals. Someone has to take the lead, and we are doing it. We have decided to incorporate cable operators as shareholders or agents for this campaign.”
Many countries are switching to digital transmission as per International Telecommu-nication Union (ITU) policy. Based on this policy, various targets have been set in Nepal too. Bhattachan said they would also collaborate with new companies which planning to enter the cable business with digital technology.
Hong Kong’s SMT has a 47.13 percent stake in the company, while the rest is held by Nepali entrepreneurs.
The AGM also elected a five board members—two representing SMT and three from domestic investors. They are Carmen Chen and Frank Fisher from SMT, and Bhattachan, Hem Raj Dhakal (Ramu) and Asesh Raj Bahak representing Nepali investors.
