Authorities told to be alert for fire-induced disasters

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

Mar 28, 2015-

With the onset of dry and windy season, various Tarai districts have started witnessing fire hazards. To mitigate the risks related to fire, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development has directed authorities at local bodies to remain alert and to prepare for possibilities of fire.

Issuing a circular on Wednesday, the ministry has asked the local authorities in all districts to launch focused activities to minimise or control the fire-induced disasters.

The local communities should be made aware of the possible consequences from poor handling or negligence of inflammable substances, the circular reads.

Similarly, the ministry has also instructed the municipalities that have received the government fund to buy fire engines at the earliest. To those municipalities that already own fire engines, the ministry has directed them to keep them in operational state.

Other directions include proper management of adequate human resources required to operate existing fire engines around the clock, engage local communities, security personnel, private sector and disaster management committees to discourage any untoward events due to fire.

During the months between March and June, many fire related incidents, including wildfires, are reported from various parts of the country, mostly from the Tarai districts where the settlements are clustered and houses are vulnerable to fire.
