Oppn parties to enforce general strike

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

Apr 6, 2015-

Despite pressure from various quarters, the 30-party opposition alliance led by the UCPN (Maoist) has decided to enforce its scheduled three-day general strike starting Tuesday.

A meeting of the alliance on Monday evening refused to backtrack from enforcing banda arguing that the ruling parties could not impress them as promised during cross-party negotiations. They accused ruling parties of continuously pushing for putting disputed issues of the constitution on voting instead of seeking consensus at the political level.

“The government refused to budge from its stance to start voting process. So, there is no need to withdraw protest programmes,” said Maoist leader Barsha Man Pun.

Opposition parties and their sister wings staged torch rallies across the country in protest of a planned promulgation of a new constitution through the voting process in the Constituent Assembly. Maoist leaders said dozens of their cadres were injured during such rallies.
