- doti bus crash
Apr 8, 2015-
Doti District Court has concluded that the bus accident that claimed 29 lives seven months ago was caused due to the negligence of its driver and sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
A single bench of Judge Dhan Singh Mahara held Birendra Sahu accountable for the accident and handed down the verdict on March 25, Nawaraj Joshi, the court registrar, told the Post on Wednesday.
Joshi said Birendra was given the maximum sentence under the Motor Vehicles and Transport Act after it was revealed that the bus was carrying passengers beyond its capacity while the vehicle itself was not in a driving condition, that it needed urgent repair when the accident took place on October 6, 2014. While the court has held driver Birendra responsible for the accident, the owner of the bus, Dambar Sahu, has been given a clean chit.
The Dhangadhi-bound bus had swerved off the road and fell some 250 metres at Katkate in Chattiwan VDC-5. Meanwhile, the District Administration Office has received Rs 2.2 million meant for compensating the victims’ families, who would be getting Rs 75,000 each. The victims’ families have, however, complained that the amount is insufficient.
