Because, less is sometimes more!

Apr 16, 2015-

Let’s be honest, for most of us, a hefty price tag preposterously screams quality and elegance. But that doesn’t have to be necessarily true. And we're stressing the fact, particularly, after the shiny new ARK Edge A5HDs started rolling out of the assembly line at Him Electronics this past February. Billed as the first smartphone with Nepali branding, each of these modestly graceful smartphones went on sale for Rs 14, 490 with the specifications that equal, if not exceed, other premium foreign smartphones in the Nepali market. Here is our hands-on review of the gadget.

The cool factor

With such a sleek design, lag-less performance, and a solid construct, it doesn’t add up why the premium ARK Edge is so inexpensive. Neither does it appear to be the pilot batch of smartphones from an amateur company. Yet, the coolest thing is its affordability. For common Nepalis, it’s worth a month’s pay, or two at most, which is not bad at all. Secondly, it supports dual SIM, which is ideal for carrying one each of Ncell and NTC numbers. And, there is that sturdy flip-cover that replaces the original back cover of the phone.

The good

The cost alone is not the reason why you should settle with this nifty smartphone. The phone comes with 8GB internal storage that is extendable up to 32GB with a micro SD card. The cameras—with 13MP primary and 3MP front camera—aren’t feeble either. Add the 5-inch, 720 x 1280 IPS HD display that is impressively responsive and vibrant, and the phone is worthy to sit well between giants as the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S6. Although, weighing at 164gm, the phone is a tad bulkier, but still lighter for its size. Nonetheless, the 1.3GHz Quad Core processor and a 1GB RAM effortlessly runs the standard Android 4.4 Kit Kat with no interruptions.

The bad

Only two things, the battery and the memory. Although its 2000mAh Li-ion removable battery promises up to 6 hours of talk time, it turns out to be a glaring flaw as power users may find it draining more swiftly. So, to carry an additional battery pack or a portable powerbank is advised. And, although a 32GB extension may seem adequate, a larger storage support would have been more apt.

The word

The thing about ARK Edge A5HD is that it is not a perfect smartphone, but so are iPhones and Samsungs. Despite some overlooked issues, this reasonably priced smartphone does what a smartphone is expected of doing—take and edit photos, play videos and songs, and browse social media and basically be Internet-savvy. Coming with a 12-month warranty and numerous ARK Stations for customer support, there is no reason why anyone shouldn’t get their hands on these babies.
