Govt announces Rs 20b trust to fund rebuilding

The government on Thursday set up a national reconstruction fund to rebuild the physical infrastructures that collapsed as a result of Saturday’s deadly earthquake.  

The Cabinet meeting allocated Rs 20 billion for the fund and aims to collect Rs 200billion.

The fund will be used for the resettlement of people rendered homeless by the disaster with the construction of low cost houses, reconstruct the demolished government buildings and other construction works.

The meeting also decided to provide Rs 140,000 as immediate relief to each of the families of those who died in the earthquake for funeral expenses. The government has decided to provide Rs 25,000 to each of the families who are capable enough to reconstruct their houses with minor repair.

The Cabinet meet agreed on forming a Prime Minister-headed high-level monitoring and assistance coordination committee consisting of top leaders of major political parties.
