Elderly man back to cave
May 9, 2015-
An elderly Chepang who was rescued from a cave and gifted a house around 15 months ago has returned to the cave as his house has been damaged by the April 25 earthquake.Jayapati Chepang, 103, of Bharta-4 in Makawanpur had been living in the house, built by the District Administration Office, since January 28, 2014.
“The quake destroyed the upper storey of the house but I survived as I was outside,” Jayapati said, adding that he was covered with dust when a part of the house collapsed.Holding a stick in his hand, the elderly Chepang returned to the cave with his 17-year-old grandson and was satisfied to see the cave was not being affected by the quake at all.
“I had spent my days in this cave during the quake in 1990 BS,” he said, adding, “My cave is safer than the government-made house,” he said.Local resident Mahesh Chepang, however, said they are collecting funds to repair Jayapati’s house. The earthquake has destroyed 163 houses in Bharta.
