Relief works start in Dolakha district
May 15, 2015-
Following the destruction caused by the 7.3 magnitude tremor of May 12 in Dolakha district, the state agencies concentrated on rescue efforts have returned to relief distribution.
Stating that the rescue operation was almost complete, Resham Lal Kandel, coordinator of the District Disaster Management Committee said that they were now invested in relief works.
Although the private sector has been tasked with relief distribution in 48 VDCs in the district, all of them could not resume relief distribution process on Friday due to the landslide obstructions in various road sections, Kandel said.
According to the committee, PLAN Nepal has taken the responsibility of distributing relief in Suspakshyamawati, Lapilang, Boch, Sunkhani, Sunda-rawati, Lakuri, Maga, Phasku, Katakuti, Sailung, Tamchet, Dudhpokhari, Bhusapheda, Powati, Ghyangsukathokar, Bhedpu and Dandakharka VDCs. Likewise, various other organisations have taken the responsibility of relief distribution in affected areas.
Of the 56,000 houses destroyed by the quake, only 27,000 tents have reached the district, among which 22,000 have already been distributed. While many of the victims were seen waiting for relief outside the Nepal Army camp in Charikot, tents taken by the District Chamber of Commerce and Industries were looted during distribution.
According to official figures, 89 people have been reported dead with more than 250 injured in Dolakha. Most of the injured have been referred to the Capital-based hospitals for treatment.
Meanwhile, the tarpaulins distributed to lawmakers that were later returned have been sent to quake-hit Dolakha district on Friday.
Assistant Secretary Suraj Kumar Dura handed over 422 tarpaulins to the Chairman of DDMC, Premlal Lamichhane. Dura said the remaining tarpaulins will also be returned.
The relief materials are set to be distributed in Bhimeshwor Municipality including other quake-hit areas.
