Govt to deploy Nepal Army for disaster mgmt

The government has decided to deploy the Nepal Army to carry out relief, relocation and rehabilitation works through the Security Council.

A Cabinet meeting on Monday decided to recommend the proposal to President Ram Baran Yadav to mobilise Nepal Army until mid-July, Minister for General Administration Lal Babu Pandit said. Nepal Army had on May 9 launched ambitious operation ´Sankat Mochan’ in quake-hit areas after thousands of foreign search and rescue teams returned home after the government called off the search operations. The NA has been in the field, being actively involved in rescue and relief works, since April 25,but its continued deployment requires a Cabinet recommendation and subsequent approval from the President, the supreme commander of the Nepal Army.

NA personnel have already been deployed to 580 VDCsin14 districts worst-hit by the Great Earthquake and aftershocks. Under the new mandate, the army personnel will conduct search and rescue operations, gather information in the quake-hit areas for another month.
