KMC chief Tandukar removed from duty

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

May 25, 2015-

The government has removed Chief Executive Officer of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), Purna Bhakta Tandukar, from his post on Monday.

Officials at the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development said KMC chief Tandukar was discharged from his position and transferred to additional group of the Ministry of General Administration owing to his failure to accomplish ‘official responsibility’ in connection with rescue and relief works following the recent earthquake.

“He was absent from work for the last few days, so the ministry removed him  as we all know it is time to work round the clock rather than waste time,” said a senior official at the Ministry.  According to an official from the Ministry, Tandukar could not fulfill his responsibility even after getting directives to immediately arrange basic living conditions for Kathmandu residents displaced by the earthquake.

The Ministry was not happy with Tandukar’s work in the aftermath of the devastating quake. “Instead of performing well, he was asking to be transferred elsewhere all the time,” another local development ministry official said.

Deputy Prime Minister and Local Development Minister Prakash Man Singh, according to ministry officials, had asked him to focus on relief distribution, debris removal and rebuilding operations or face action.  It has been learnt that the Ministry is preparing to appoint a new CEO at the KMC soon.
