Jun 3, 2015-

More than 260 quintals of foodstuff has been collected in Banke district as of Monday through what campaigners call a Mutthidan campaign, where each individual donates a fistful of relief materials.

The campaign, headed by various private and government organisations in the district, has collected 150 quintal rice, 112 quintal wheat, seven quintal lentils, one quintal beaten rice and half-quintal salt from door-to-door campaigns.

The ongoing campaign for earthquake victims has also collected about Rs 100,000 in cash donations.

The campaigners have set a target of sending 150 tons of foodstuff to the affected areas. Relief supplies collected from areas including Udhrapur, Bankatwa, Binauna, Radhapur, Udaypur, Manikapur and Paraspur have been stored in Nepalgunj, while collection is ongoing in other VDCs, and in Nepalgunj and Kohalpur.

“Every farmer has willingly donated for the cause,”said President of the Nepalgunj Chamber of Commerce, Krishna Prasad Shrestha, who is also coordinating the relief collection efforts. “More has been collected and will be brought to Nepalgunj soon.”

Likewise, the CPN-UML has pledged to provide at least 500 quintals of foodstuff to the central fund.

After the party headquarters here asked party workers to collect at least 1,000 quintals of foodstuff from all the Tarai districts, cadres from the top level to the village-committee levels have been mobilised for the Mutthidan campaign, according to the Secretary of CPN-UML Banke District Committee Ratna Khatri.

“Rs 300,000 has already been sent, so it will be difficult to send an additional 1,000 quintal foodstuff, but our cadres are actively involved in the relief efforts, as per party directives,” he said.
