The Department of Education has asked the District Education Offices in earthquake-affected districts to submit the details of children who lost their parents in the disaster so that the government could plan for their education.
The Education Ministry has announced to provide free education for all school-age children orphaned by the devastating earthquake on April 25 and its aftershocks.
All such children will get free education along with hostel facility in public or private schools. The ministry has decided to collaborate with a number of schools to manage the education of the children.
In the first phase, 500 of them will be provided free education with help from the Private and Boarding Schools Organisation Nepal and the SOS Village Nepal, Sanothimi.
Pabson has agreed to educate 300 children free of charge while the SOS will care for 200 others. According to ministry spokesman Hari Lamsal, the government will take the responsibility of educating all the children who have nobody to look after them.
A comprehensive plan would be drawn up after receiving details from the DEOs. The Education Department estimates that as many as 2,000 children will require the government’s help. Around 9,000 people lost their lives in the earthquakes.
