Govt to erect 5 tall view towers

Jul 7, 2015-

The government has proposed to erect five tall view towers, one each in the five development regions, in a bid to attract domestic and foreign tourists and boost local economies. The tower plan will be included in the government’s budget for the next fiscal year.

The collapse of the Dharahara in Kathmandu during the April 25 earthquake has left the country without a showable view tower.

There are vantage points in Bhedetar, Nagarkot, Daman, Palpa, Sarangkot and Sri

Antu in Ilam, but they are short, officials said.

“We have included the plan in our programme for the next fiscal year,” said Chandramani Adhikari, a member of the National Planning Commission (NPC) who oversees budget affairs. ”Funding will be set aside to build the towers.” According to him, the view towers will be constructed with earthquake resistant technology.

Although reconstruction has been the top priority of the government after the

massive destruction caused by the earthquake, it has planned to build the view

towers keeping in mind the long-term economic benefits they will bring to all the regions, according to NPC officials. The continuation of the existing big projects will also get primacy in the new budget.

According to Adhikari, the view towers will be built by taking into consideration their potential economic impact. As per the plan, the towers will be tall structures containing shopping and other facilities.

“A market will be developed around the towers which will help to boost economic activities in the region,” said Adhikari. “There will be high vision galleries.”

The standards for the towers will be prepared after the announcement in the budget. According to Adhikari, the government itself will invest in the construction of the towers.

According to NPC officials, they have been receiving frequent requests to build small view towers, but they are always rejected.

The proposal to build tall towers with the idea of developing markets around them is a new development, according to another NPC official.
