- POST REPORT, Kathmandu
Govt to install 11 new stations

Jul 21, 2015-

The Department of Environment (DoE) under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (MoSTE) is planning to install 11 air quality monitoring stations in major cities across the country by the end of this fiscal year.

Considering the need to assess air quality status throughout the country and mitigate the increasing threat on public health from the exposure of various harmful pollutants and particulate matters, the government is planning to install the monitoring stations, said Suraj Pokharel, director general at the DoE.

According to Pokharel, of the total 11 stations planned for installation, the department will mobilise funds for three stations from its budget while developmental partners will support for the remaining eight stations. It is estimated that each station will cost around Rs 10 million.

Due to lack of adequate air quality monitoring stations to assess and update on air quality status, people are unaware of possible health consequences resulting from poor air quality.

Kathmandu Valley had installed six monitoring stations in various places in 2000 to study air pollutants. However, it became dysfunctional in 2007 due to poor management.

The DoE has working to bring the non-functional air quality monitoring stations back into operation and provide real-time information on pollution, especially the level of nine toxic air pollutants that are considered hazardous to the public health and cause respiratory diseases, eye problems, heart ailments, skin diseases and even cancers, according to officials at the department.

The National Ambient Air Quality Standard 2012 requires effective monitoring and collection of eight-hour and 24-hour samples of air pollutants such as Total Suspended Particulates, Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5), carbon monoxide, lead and ozone levels for at least 347 days in a year. However, it remains unimplemented in the absence of monitoring stations.
