- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

Jul 24, 2015-

The government has formed separate taskforces to oversee specific strategies and work policies under the Forest Policy 2014 in order to ensure their implementation.

The policy envisions dedicating 40 percent of the country’s land to forests and promoting sustainable forest management approaches. To that end, it has proposed seven thematic schemes: increasing productivity of forest area and forest resources through sustainable forest management, ensuring benefits from the conservation of biodiversity and natural resources, integrated conservation and management plan for watersheds to increase production from the conservation of water and land surface, engagement of private sector for forest development, mitigating the negative impacts of climate change, and enabling the forest management become more effective by working on good governance, inclusiveness and social justice.

Officials said the implementation of each of these programmes will be overseen by a dedicated taskforce. The task force on each thematic policy will be responsible for bringing to fruition the implementation plan, including immediate, short-term and long-term programmes focused in the respective policies.

Each taskforce will also recommend institutional improvement plans and work related with capacity building and empowerment of the concerned authorities within the MoFSC and related agencies working in the forest sector.
