The New Face of Nanglo
- Chicken Chilli and Corn Crackle Burger, Cosy Corner Bun Omelette and fried chicken; every food at Nanglo Express is worth losing your head for.
Jul 24, 2015-
You think you've got better things to do in New Road than eat? Well, think again, because Nanglo Express has just opened up in New Road where the food is mighty delicious, and unbelievably quick too.
Tucked inside a basement, towards the far end of the boulevard, on the right side as you enter through New Road gate, Nanglo Express appears even more interesting once you climb down the stairs. The minimalist doodle of urban New Road with street lights and signs adorn the bright walls while the service counter with lighted menu panels overlooks dining spaces, neat and cosy, over the stone-paved floor- all collectively giving off a distinct fast food vibe.
But it's not a fast food joint, it's a quick service restaurant. The difference? Taijash Kakshapati, the operator of this new Nanglo outlet, says, “Food is freshly cooked to order so there is some wait unlike in an actual fast food outlet where you're instantly served. But it never is more than 5 to 10 minutes, we make sure of that.”
What We Had
Chicken Chilly Burger
An entirely new take on chicken burger, this one comes with a large patty that's marinated in ginger-garlic, soy and vinegar for 24 hours before deep frying with cabbage, onions and tomatoes to get a crispy texture. The result is a juicy chunk of meat, spicy and crunchy, that sits well under a bed of crisp lettuce sandwiched between Nanglo's buns along side fries, it can be ordered on its own or included in a combo.
No restaurant menu is complete without fried chicken, it appears. But at Nanglo Express, chicken drumsticks go through a heck of a lot before they're charmingly put on a plate. Each chicken piece gets marinated in ginger-garlic paste, butter-milk and breaded three times but without eggs, which keeps the crust thinner but crispier when frying. It also keeps the flavour of the meat untouched while preserving the juices.
This is a rich and fulfilling portion of pasta cooked deliciously in white sauce with equal parts of butter and flour in low heat. Milk, water and whisked egg yolk are added to obtain thick, creamy texture, after which the mixture is tossed with sautéed mushroom before being served with a hefty amount of grated yak cheese on top.
As Nanglo Express' new menu attacks the gimmick of Nepali fast food culture with a quicker service and a lot of interesting additions to its menu, some of the classic Nanglo fares like momos and pizzas remain unchanged. So, feel free to trade out your favourite joint for this one because the food here is so tasty and inexpensive that it's worth losing your head for.
