CPN-UML Chair KP Oli has said the constitution draft could be reviewed to settle the demarcation row.In a press meet on Tuesday, Oli said disputes over state borders would be settled also by a federal commission. He appealed to UML leaders and cadres, as well as other parties and organisations, not to lose patience at a time when the parties are about to realise the long-cherished dream of promulgating a people’s constitution.

At the new party office in Dhumbarahi, Oli said the provinces were created after thorough consideration of the natural resources, access to administrative centres, infrastructure and economic viability. But the structure could be modified before constitution promulgation. The party appealed to its cadres and the public not to be provoked to foil the bid to deliver the statute without further delay.

Assuring cadres that “genuine” public concerns would be addressed, Oli asked the people to register their suggestions at the CA. “There’s no need to vandalise property and attack police. Please have patience.”

Oli clarified that the constitution blueprint was an outcome of compromise among the parties with divergent agendas. They had no option but to ignore some of the demands as they were conflicting. For example, the Tharus want Banke and Bardiya in a Tharuhat state, while others are fighting for the entire Mid West as a single province, he said.

The UML has blamed “forces keen to obstruct constitution promulgation” for the Surkhet protest. It asked the government to investigate the matter and take action against the vandals and arsonists.
