Child labour goes unchecked
Sep 6, 2015-
Twelve-year-old Naresh Chaudhary of Basgadhi in Baridya has been working as a daily wage worker in Chitwan. He works for Aaptari-Mugling road expansion projects at Bharlang in Kabilash VDC. He has been carrying sands on a trolley for the past one month. This is just an example. There are several children under 16 years of age who are found working in the construction sites, hotels and restaurants. Some of them are also involved in high risk jobs in the district.
Children from deprived families, Dalits and marginalised communities are compelled to work as daily wage worker and thus are deprived of school education.
As concerned authorities are not apathetic towards the matter, minors continue to work under the scorching heat. Even the NGOs and INGOs working for child rights are unaware of children’s predicament.
Advocate Phulmaya Ranabhat said the Department of Labour is not concerning about child welfare. She said the law against the child labour cannot be implemented due to the lack of inspection and monitoring from the concerned authorities.
