Landslides obstruct Mechi Highway
Sep 6, 2015-
Recent landslides triggered by incessant rainfall have damaged the Taplejung-Panchthar section of Mechi Highway at several locations, causing difficulties for people travelling on the route.
Authorities concerned said the road has been blocked at around 10 locations, including Lyangba, Aadheri and Saptel Dobato, in the 17 kilometre section and that they are still struggling to remove debris and resume traffic.
Ganga Poudel, supervisor at the Division Road Office in Illam, said they are planning to carry out blasting process to remove boulders from the Dhuseni area. He said they are facing difficulties as several milk tankers and cabs are trapped in the area for the past one week.
Another supervisor, Nabin Upreti, said even motorcycle can’t pass through the road near Khoksekhola area.
Ambulance driver Rajendra Niraula said traffic movement is yet to resume and that several vehicles are stranded in between the landslides.
A driver said he was able to escape a massive landslip just by a few minutes. “We are waiting for the removal of the debris as there are no other alternative routes,” he said.
