Quake victims stage protest against relief distribution delay

Local administration says releif distribution process is being delayed due to the dispute among the local political parties

Oct 13, 2015-Enraged by the delay in distribution of relief amount, earthquake victims staged demonstration in front of Nuwakot District Administration Office on Monday.

One thousand and forty-two quake victims from Haldekalika VDC have not received government relief even six months after the earthquake.

Chief District Officer (CDO) Umesh Kumar Dhakal said the office could not distribute the relief amount due to the dispute among the local political parties.

Out of 1,042 quake victims, the CPN-UML, UCPN (Maoist) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party have jointly recommended 840 victims for relief amount. The Nepali Congress, however, protested the decision of the three parties, accusing them of discriminating the other victims, CDO Dhakal said.

Two week ago, the local administration and the local political parties had decided to distribute Rs 15,000 each to the quake-affected households for buying galvanised zinc sheets. But the planned relief distribution could not take place as the Secretary of Haldekalika VDC Rabin Dhakal left for Kathmandu after calling the earthquake victims to the district headquarters to receive their identity cards.

The earthquake victims have accused the local administration and concerned government agencies for the delay. Kanchhi Pariyar, one of the earthquake victims, said the relief fund has already been deposited in the bank at their VDC, but the local administration has not started the distribution process.

Dashain is approaching near and the earthquake victims do not know how they will celebrate the festival this year.
