Nepal Dairy Association and Dairy Sangh said due to the closure of the dairies, about 80,000 litres of milk produced by farmers form Kavre, Chitwan, Nawalparasi and Rupandhi has remained unsold. The dairy operators said they were facing daily loss of Rs10 million due to the closure.
The largest of the shut dairies, Sitaram Gokul Milk, used to deliver 45,000 litres of milk to the Kathmandu Valley daily. Arpan Dairy, which used to collect 14,000 litres a day, has remained closed for the past week. HD and D&D dairies, which used to collect 10,000 litres a day, are not collecting milk from farmers.
Nepal Dairy Association represents 135 dairies, while Dairy Sangh represents 22 dairies. In a joint statement, they have asked the government to provide 6,000 litres of petroleum products daily to resume operations of the closed factories and those running under stress.
