Parties miss consensus candidate deadline

- Post Report, Kathmandu

Oct 26, 2015-

The parties failed to select consensus candidates for President and Vice President posts within the given deadline as an all-party meeting ended inconclusively on Sunday.

The Parliament Secretariat, publishing the election schedule on Saturday, had called the parties to nominate consensus candidates between 11am and 1pm on Sunday.

However, the parties failed to agree to common candidates after both the ruling CPN-UML and the opposition Nepali Congress claimed the top post. The selection of the head and deputy head of the state will be on the majoritarian basis now.

Issuing a notice, Parliament Secretariat General Secretary Manohar Prasad Bhattarai, who is also the election officer, said the majority election process will commence on Tuesday.

The Parliament Secretariat has allocated 10am to 1pm on Tuesday for the registration of candidacy for both the posts while the final list of candidates will be announced at 3pm on the same day. Voting for both the posts will start at 11am on Wednesday and the results will be announced at 5pm the same day. According to the secretariat, there will be secret voting and a candidate needs 299 votes in Parliament to win.
