US concerned about crisis
The United States has expressed concerns about critical shortages of essential supplies as a result of volatility along the Nepal-India border and a potential humanitarian crisis.The United States has expressed concerns about critical shortages of essential supplies as a result of volatility along the Nepal-India border and a potential humanitarian crisis.
“The United States is deeply concerned by the increasingly volatile situation along the Nepal-India border, resulting in critical shortages of fuel, medicine, and foodstuffs, including in areas still reeling from the devastating earthquakes of April and May,” a US embassy statement said on Thursday.
With winter approaching fast, the US expressed concerns over the inability of the international donor community “to deliver vital relief and shelter supplies to many vulnerable communities.”
The United States called on everyone involved to make extra efforts to address the crisis. “Lives are at stake, and we are concerned that a humanitarian crisis may result. The United States calls on all those involved to redouble their efforts to resolve this crisis,” the statement said. The US embassy reiterated its readiness to assist the people and government of Nepal.
Donors meet PM to voice worries
A delegation of donor countries and aid agencies called on PM KP Oli on Thursday and expressed their worries about the recent situation and an impending humanitarian crisis in Nepal.
The delegation discussed the latest humanitarian situation and the difficulties in providing assistance to earthquake survivors because of the fuel crisis. The delegation including the heads of mission from European Union, Britain, Japan, ADB, USAID and Switzerland was led by EU Ambassador to Nepal Rensje Teerink.
Earlier, the EU had issued a statement on India’s ‘unofficial blockade’ against Nepal and the problems caused. The donors also sought the government’s position on the Reconstruction Authority. PM Oli briefed the team on the existing scenario. The PM sought the diplomats’ help and support.
