Bhattarai-led team urges PM to swiftly resolve Tarai crisis
Nov 8, 2015-
A team of civil society members led by former prime minister Baburam Bhattarai submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister KP Oli on Saturday, urging a solution to the Tarai crisis and blockade imposed by Indian government.
The Bhattarai-led team has maintained that the protest by Madhes-based parties and the blockade are two different issues and should be resolved accordingly.
“The protest of Madhes-based parties is our internal issue which could be resolved through amendment in the Constitution, while blockade should be resolved through diplomatic means,” the memorandum reads.
The civil society members asked parties to demonstrate sincere responsibility for the settlement of the two issues. They also requested not to divide in the category of nationalist and anti-nationalist. “The demands of Madhesi, Janajati, Tharu and other marginalised communities should be addressed through dialogue,” said Bhattarai, who reached Baluwatar along with 47 civil society leaders, to handover the memorandum.
They also warned that excessive use of force in the Tarai could put the situation out of control. The memorandum was submitted as per the campaign launched by Bhattarai to drum up support of civil society leaders for a new political party.
The Bhattarai-led civil society leaders also urged PM Oli to speed up the task of forming Reconstruction Authority as soon as possible. Similarly, they asked the PM to take measures to control black marketeering and rise in prices of daily essentials.
