NTB, CBI sign deal to revive tourism

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI), a government agency of the Netherlands, have signed a memorandum of understanding to work towards the revival of Nepal’s shattered tourism.

The purpose of the accord signed on Friday is to establish cooperation between the two parties in order to promote and market the Nepal tourism sector in the European market and contribute to the social marketing expertise of the NTB and tour operators in Nepal, the NTB said in a press release.

As per the pact, the two parties will cooperate and pool resources for the purposes of capacity-building, training and research in tourism marketing related matters identified by and agreed between the parties.

The activities include developing a campaign website (www.nepalnow.org) with factual information and stories from Nepal, especially from foreign tourists, and developing a social media campaign to get the message out in the European market, including journalists and bloggers missions to Nepal.

Other activities include implementing a media campaign directed at the traditional media (newspaper, television, direct mailing), European tour operators and sector associations to support the social media campaign; supporting the www.welcomeNepal website to be ready to take over the functions of the temporary campaign website by mid-2016; and coordinating the different tourism stakeholders in Nepal to align their activities under the NTB.

The Tourism Ministry has said that tourist arrivals plunged 46 percent in the first 10 months as a series of disasters including earthquakes, Tarai unrest and Indian embargo pounded Nepal’s tourism sector. Nepal lost 352,330 tourists during the review period, hitting foreign exchange earnings and jobs in the industry. The country received 300,325 foreign visitors by air until October, down from 652,655 in the same period last year.

Not only has the number of tourists come down, the average length of stay has also declined to six days from 12.44 days. Jobs in the tourism industry have dropped 25 percent and hotel occupancy has plunged below 20 percent, the ministry’s report said.

Sunil Sharma, NTB Officiating Director - Public Relations and Publicity, and Anne Kempers, CBI Director for Asia Department, signed the memorandum of understanding amid an event.
