The constitutional anti-graft body has summoned high-profile politicians, bureaucrats and civil society leaders for interrogation.
Some UML leaders on Thursday collected the 13-page form from the CIAA to submit their property details following Prime Minister KP Oli’s instruction to cooperate with the commission in its investigation.
UML leaders Rajendra Pandey, Surendra Pandey, Ichchha Raj Tamang, Bijay Poudel and Banshidhar Mishra had reached the CIAA headquarters to collect the forms immediately after Prime Minister Oli’s instructions.
CPN-UML politburo member Poudel, who has also been summoned by the anti-graft body, has resigned from his party position “to facilitate investigation”.
UML Spokesperson Yogesh Bhattarai said the party has no policy of obstructing
legal investigation carried out by the CIAA. However, he hinted at party’s intention to challenge the CIAA move in the court of law.
Meanwhile, prominent civil society leader Kanak Mani Dixit has registered a complaint at the CIAA, questioning the process of summoning him without completing due process.
On Wednesday, CIAA Chief Commissioner Lokman Singh Karki, while delivering a speech at a programme organised to mark the International Anti-Corruption Day, had said the 29 summons was just the tip of the iceberg and that the anti-graft body would continue its investigation even if it means “sacrificing” his job.
The ruling UML has strongly objected to the anti-graft body’s move, accusing it of trumping up politically motivated charges against its leaders.
