Indian Ministry of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj has urged the agitating Madhes-based parties of Nepal to resolve the current political crisis through consensus and understanding.

During a diplomatic consultation on the Nepal issue at South Block in New Delhi on Wednesday, MEA officials urged the agitating Madhesi Morcha to “seek solutions from within the joint proposal brought up by major parties,” a diplomatic source present in the meeting told the Post.

Sources said India was positive about Nepal Parliament’s move to table the Constitution Amendment Bill. The MEA officials have assured that the situation will ease soon after the amendment process reaches its conclusion.

“The meeting did not enter into topic-wise discussion on demarcation or citizenship,” said a source privy to the developments, quoting Indian officials. “Content is not our issue. We can only recommend that the Nepal government engage with the agitating sides as soon as possible.”

Following a meeting with four leaders of Madhesi Morcha in New Delhi last week, Indian External Affairs Minister Swaraj had hinted that the obstructions at the Nepal-India border points would ease soon. But there has not been any improvement in the situation.

Amidst confusion and standoff, Nepali Ambassador to India Deep Kumar Upadhyay, along with other diplomats, had reached South Block for a consultation on Wednesday. Nepal Desk chief Abhay Thakur was among the MEA officials present in the discussion. The meeting, which was convened at the request of Upadhyay, lasted around 90 minutes, according to the source.
