The Ministry of Irrigation has initiated a detailed study to build a barrage on the Sapta Koshi River. The construction will be completed in five years, said Irrigation Minister Umesh Yadav during a visit to Chatara, Sunsari to observe the progress of the survey.
According to Yadav, the barrage is being constructed with the aim of irrigating farmlands in Saptari, Siraha, Udaypur, Sunsari and Morang. It is expected to cost Rs8 billion.
A tunnel will be built to carry water to Saptari, Siraha and Udaypur districts while the irrigation canal in Sunsari and Morang will be upgraded.
“No treaty or agreement prevents the construction of the barrage which will benefit a large number of Nepalis,” Minister Yadav said. “The Nepali people have a right to benefit from the water resources of the country. No one and no treaty can prevent the people from benefitting.”
He added that the ministry was making preparations to upgrade the Sunsari-Morang Irrigation Project into a national pride project. Stating that the consumers committee of the project had been reaping benefits from it, the minister said that such bodies would be scrapped.
