Ishan, Lochan Acharya and Surendra Bajagain had collected the money by raising fund from their friends and various social organisations.
“The widows of these deceased are in their early twenties and they have children,” said Ishan, “They are in financial dire straits, so we wanted to set up a fund to educate their children up to secondary level.”
Sohan’s widow Binita, 23, has two sons, three-year-old Rajan and one-year-old Ravi. Similarly, Miya’s widow Sobina, 18, who is nine-month pregnant, has a one-year-old daughter, Hasbuna Khatun, while Ram’s widow Babita Kumari, 19, has a four-month-old baby.
Ishan said that they have set up a revolving fund from which a fixed sum of money will be given to the widows every three months until their children reach the age of 16.
Actor Karma, one of the supporters of the initiative, handed over Rs 5,000 to the family members at their homes recently. The remaining amount was deposited in a bank account from which the widow will be getting Rs 5,000 every three month.
“When the earthquake ravaged the hill districts, Madhesi people had extended support. Now it’s Kathmandu’s turn to stand up for Madhes,” Karma said.
Earlier, Ishan, Lochan
and Surendra had journeyed more than 11,000 kilometres on foot from Kanchanpur to Jhapa interacting with the people from both Hill and Tarai communities to understand their relations and where they stand on the issue of Madhes.
