Six passengers died and 16 others were injured in a bus accident on the East-West highway on Saturday night. Four of the injured are said to be critical.
The speeding vehicle (Na 4 Kha 6841) lost control and overturned at Ghodaha in Devdaha Municipality-10 of Rupandehi district, said police. The bus was heading to Nepalgunj from Narayangadh. There were 36 passengers on board when the incident happened.
Police identified the deceased as Tara Sharma, 22, of Taratal-9 in Bardiya; Prakash Shahi, 22, of Bhimdutta-5 in Kanchanpur; Suraj Shah, 20, of Bara; Shanti Darjee, 35, and Jamuna BK of Devdaha in Rupandehi. The identity of one more victim is yet to be ascertained.
Five persons died on the spot, while another victim succumbed to injuries at Lumbini Zonal Hospital in Butwal.
Police suspect that the incident occurred as the driver dozed off while driving the vehicle. The driver and his assistance have not come to contact until Sunday evening.
“We were asleep when the incident took place. The vehicle suddenly overturned on the roadside. We could survive the incident as local people and security personnel came to our rescue immediately,” said Manju Chhetri of Nepalgunj.
The injured are receiving treatment in local health facilities. Four critically injured have been referred to Bharatpur for further treatment, said police.
