Feltman worried politics pushing lives to the brink
Feltman worried politics pushing lives to the brinkVisiting UN Under-secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffery Feltman has expressed “deep concern about current developments that are adversely affecting Nepal’s humanitarian situation, economic performance and reconstruction efforts”.
Feltman called on Nepal’s political leadership to resolve the differences over constitutional arrangements with urgent priority, according to a statement issued by the UN in Nepal on Saturday, at the end of his two-day visit.
“He also underscored the importance of rebuilding trust amongst different groups, including through agreement on the modalities of the process to delineate internal borders,” the statement said. Meanwhile, Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala said on Saturday that the ongoing Tarai crisis would be resolved after Parliament endorses constitution amendments that are being discussed in the House.
During his meeting with the visiting UN envoy, Koirala said the parties were close to consensus on the amendment proposal registered by his government.
“One section does not want to hear about constitution amendment while others do not want to talk about demarcation. The amendment proposal registered by the NC is a meeting point to resolve the crisis,” Koirala was quoted as telling the diplomat.
According to Koirala’s Secretariat, the two also discussed about a wide range of political issues as well as the country’s economic and social development. Feltman encouraged the largest party to play a vital role in resolving the Madhes crisis.
