Creating Possibilities, a social organisation working for children, has distributed bicycles to 50 girl students in Dang district, to encourage them to go to school regularly. The girls are children of former Kamaiyas (indentured labourers) of Tharu community.
Sharada Chaudhary, a fourth grader student from Parsiya village of Gangaparaspur VDC-4, said she and her friends felt an incredible sense of relief after receiving the bicycle. “We had to walk for hours to reach school. Now we have bicycles to get us to school,” said Sharada. Nura Basnet, programme officer of Creating Possibilities, said the bicycles were distributed to encourage the girls to continue their school. “They can reach school in time now, attend their classes as regular as possible,” she said.
Urmila Chaudhary, former chairperson of Freed Kamlari Development Forum, said she was hopeful the cycle campaign will keep the girls at school. She said many girls from the community lived as Kamalaris because they were never sent to school by their parents, who themselves were illiterate.
