Speaking at a discussion organised by Galli Galli, a social organisation, in the Capital on Friday, experts shared their views on a digital divide that exists between service seekers and service providers in businesses and government organisations.
“Poor human resource, lack of monitoring and lack of awareness among public on utilisation of digital services offered by local bodies like municipality and ward offices have led to failure of many innovative web-based applications and technologies,” Information and Technology Department Head at Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ram Sapkota said, “Without a critical mass of people able to understand and utilise such services, many innovations will further fail.”
Experts further made aware the participants about a generation gap between technology savvy youth generation and middle age service seekers in Nepal which has made implementation more difficult.
“The general public has a tendency to resist change which has made effective implementation more difficult,” Chief Executive Officer at Kathmandu Living Labs Nama Raj Budhathoki said, “We need to improve our research base of social-informatics to reduce information deficit present in our society.”
In order to make IT effective in reducing paperwork and providing web-based services, experts suggested raising digital awareness through interaction and management and administration of such services by concerned offices.
