The main celebration committee has scheduled several programmes to mark Martyrs’ Day (Magh 16). As per the tradition, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City is organising commemorative programmes at the four different spots in Kathmandu where four of the early freedom fighters—Shukraraj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Gangalal Shrestha and Dashrath Chand—attained martyrdom. They were handed down death sentence for waging a struggle to overthrow the Rana oligarchy in 1931. Tributes would be paid to Shastri at Pachali on January 24, to Mathema at Sifal on January 27 and to Shrestha and Chand at Shova Bhagawati on January 29.
