Produced by One World Theatre and directed by Deborah Merola, this highly entertaining play features Cuban music and dance, drama and romance. The original play won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The play is set in 1929 in Ybor City, Florida, in a small Cuban American cigar factory where cigars are still rolled by hand and “lectors” are employed to educate and entertain the workers. When
a handsome new lector reads aloud from Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics, and the American dream prove a volatile combination.
The production features well known Nepali and Indian actors Divya Dev, Rajkumar Pudasaini, Kavita Srinivasan, Loonibha Tuladhar, Sajag Rana, Hemanta Chalise, and Rojita Buddhacharya. The actors charm in elegant
period costumes designed by Kalsang Lama, original live music by Sangam Panta, a danced cock fight, and the thrilling soundtrack of authentic Cuban music of the Buena Vista Social Club.
