Security concerns should be addressed politically: Army chief
Mar 7, 2016-
Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Rajendra Chhetri has said the security concerns of the country should be addressed through the political process, adding that the security force can only be a medium in doing so.
But in case of serious threat to the national unity and sovereignty, the Nepal Army will automatically be mobilised as per the directives from the government based on the existing legal provision, Chhetri said in his address to the Army personnel at a ceremony held at the Army Headquarters on the eve of Army Day 2016 on Sunday.
The Army is always committed to bear the responsibility bestowed upon it by the Constitution of Nepal, he said, adding that its intelligence unit is closely observing the anti-national activities and developing strategy to curb them after proper evaluation. The Army is observing its establishment day with various activities coinciding with the Mahashivaratri festival on Monday. Mahashivaratri is considered the establishment day of the national defence force of the country.
“The Army is ready to support in the reconstruction of properties ravaged by last year’s devastating earthquakes if the government assigns it,” CoAS Chhetri said in a statement issued by the Directorate of Public Relations of Nepal Army on Sunday.
