Bijay Youth Club (BYC) of Hetauda stunned Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) 6-5 in sudden death tiebreaker to enter the final of Simara Gold Cup here on Wednesday.
A day after title contenders Manang Marshyangdi Club were ousted by Rupandehi XI in the quarter-finals, BYC produced another upset rallying from a goal down to tie the match at 1-1 in the normal 90 and 20 minutes of extra time. Santosh Tamang failed to convert from the spot for TAC before BYC’s Sunil BK struck in sudden death.
Jitendra Karki, Bharat Khawas, Rajin Dhimal, Dipak Gurung and Bikesh Kuthu converted their shots. The match had went to be sudden death shootout after Sunil Bal, Sanjay Rajbahak, Bhupal Gurung, Rabi Bhandari and Bishwa Adhikari scored for BYC.
In the title match on Saturday, BYC will take on the winners of Thursday’s second semi-final match between Birgunj Youth Club and Rupandehi.
TAC went ahead through a spot kick from Jitendra Karki in the 10th minute. TAC were awarded the spot kick after Manoj Bista tripped Tanka Basnet inside the area. TAC had more chances in the first half but a poor finishing, evident due to the absence of their injured striker Nawayug Shrestha, deprived them of extending the lead. Shrestha had suffered a nasty blow in TAC’s quarter-final match against Three Star on Monday when he had to be rushed to hospital after Peter Segun hit him in the forehead in chase of a ball.
At the hour mark, BYC wasted a chance to level the score when Rabi Bhandari managed to beat Kuthu but Hiranya Magar cleared the ball from goal line. Just as Army team was preparing to celebrate, BYC dealt a blow in the 87th minute. Rana levelled the scores from the close range to bring his side back in the game.
