Top leaders of the Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) on Thursday sought “India’s proactive role” to press “Kathmandu to address” their remaining demands, including revision of the federal boundaries and changes in citizenship laws. 

During a meeting with Indian Ambassador Ranjit Rae at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, the SLMM leaders told Rae that delay in giving completion to the high level political mechanism has created doubts that the three major parties are willing to revise the federal boundaries. 

During the meeting, the SLMM leaders and Rae talked about the stalled negotiations and Morcha’s plans to launch fresh protests, according to SLMM leaders. 

The Morcha is planning to launch fresh protests from mid-April. 

“The government does not appear keen to follow the ‘4-point non paper’ that Foreign Minister Kamal Thapa had submitted to New Delhi,” a source quoted Madhesi leaders as telling Rae.  

Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Nepal Chairman Upendra Yadav decline to comment on the meeting and the discussions the Morcha held with the Indian envoy. 

The Morcha has rejected the political mechanism formed on the eve of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s visit to India in February. 

The mechanism, headed by Foreign Minister Thapa, was formed in order to address the concerns of the Madhes, Janajati and Tharu communities, but it is yet to take the final shape. 

Besides Yadav, Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party Chairman Mahanth Thakur, Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra  Mahato,  Nepal Sadbhawana Party Chairman Anil Jha and Madhesi Peoples’ Rights Forum-Republic Chairman Rajkishore Yadav were present at the meeting.
