Pariyar, an assistant human rights officer at NHRC office in Biratnagar, was shot dead by Nepal Police

Mar 29, 2016-The National Human Rights Commission has decided to add a separate page to its website on rights defender Dayaram Pariyar, a staff at the commission who was killed during the period of insurgency.

Pariyar, an assistant human rights officer at NHRC office in Biratnagar, was shot dead by Nepal Police personnel ahead of Jana Andolan-II. On its 10-year memorial day on Monday, commission’s chairman Anup Raj said that the commission would make it memorable by unveiling a separate page dedicated to Pariyar, along with other activities.

Prakash Chandra Pariyar, brother of the deceased, expressed frustration over the culture of impunity and the commission’s apathy towards the death of its own staff. “My brother is not just a staff of the commission but he was also a rights defender,” he said, “He was shot dead by police who still walks scot free in society.” Despite commission’s recommendation for action, the government never held any official responsible for his murder.

The commission also announced to confer this year’s Dayaram Pariyar Human Rights Memorial Award on Kantipur journalist Shyam Sundar Shashi and Charimaya Tamang, founder of Shakti Samuha, an organisation run by survivors of human trafficking.
