Poudel panel puts pressure on Deuba to defer PP election
Nepali Congress senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel and his supporters on Monday decided to press party President Sher Bahadur Deuba to hold the election of Parliamentary Party (PP) leader only after the amendment of statute.Nepali Congress senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel and his supporters on Monday decided to press party President Sher Bahadur Deuba to hold the election of Parliamentary Party (PP) leader only after the amendment of statute.
A meeting at Poudel’s residence in Boharatar concluded that the PP statute should be amended as per the inclusive provisions of newly-adopted constitution. Leaders said that Working Committee of PP should be inclusive and proportional in line with the constitutional provisions.
“It is meaningless to hold the election without amendment to statute as per newly adopted constitution. Senior leader Poudel will talk to Deuba about this issue,” said Dhana Raj Gurung, a leader close to Deuba.
Despite Poudel’s objection, a party committee on Sunday fixed April 6 as the date for the PP election and April 8 for the working committee. Poudel’s supporters said the current process of selecting the working committee representatives from five regions should be transformed into federal structures as per the provisions in the new constitution. Along with structural changes, they are also demanding that such structures be made inclusive.
The meeting also decided to press Deuba to abide by one-man-one-post principle in the party. Similarly, it has been decided that the election of PP leader should be held on the basis of consensus to maintain the party unity. “The meeting has concluded that only the principle of one-man-one-post will make the party united and strong,” said Gurung.
As Deuba holds party presidency, leaders close to Poudel are exerting pressure on the NC chief to make the latter PP leader.
As PP leader election draws closer, relation between Deuba and Poudel has soured due to the issues concerning statute amendment and PP leadership.
A party committee formed to hold the election is preparing to write to the party president, asking him to take measures for amending the party statute.
Coordinator of the committee Ramesh Rijal said the election will be held even if the party fails to amend the proposal.
