Rai was deputed the APF chief following the suspension of Kosh Raj Onta on funds misappropriation in December last year. Onta was found guilty by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority of pocketing over Rs70 millions in collusion with junior officers and suppliers.
Government Spokes-person Sherdhan Rai confirmed his promotion. IG Rai was indicted by the Rayamajhi Commission for suppressing the 2006 People’s Movement.
Rai had joined Nepal Police in February, 1987. He was transferred to the APF in April, 2001 after the formation of the paramilitary force. Rai led several departments including administration, human resource and border security.
With the appointment, there has been a better coordination between the APF and Nepal Police, which had hit the rock bottom during Onta’s tenure. Onta’s persistent effort to provide jurisdiction to the APF to arrest persons was strongly objected to by Nepal Police. This had led to mistrust between the two security agencies.
Govt nixes citizenship of three persons
The government has nixed citizenship certificates issued to three Indian nationals. The Cabinet meeting annulled the citizenship after knowledge that the recipients had provided false affidavits to acquire the certificates.
Citizenship of Mahendra Kumar Mishra, Anil Kumar Mishra and Satish Kumar Mishra, who had got the papers from Rupandehi district, was cancelled.
The Cabinet appointed Janaklal Tiwari of Syangja as the vice-chairman of the Poor Households Support Coordination Board. The post had been vacant following the resignation of Chintan Poudel, son of Nepali Congress leader Ram Chandra Poudel.
The Cabinet also assigned new responsibilities to 12 joint-secretaries. It gave approval to work on legislation related to the national ID project.
