Women politicians criticise envoy recommendations
The government has come under criticism from female politicians for including only a few women in its list of envoy nominees. The government has come under criticism from female politicians for including only a few women in its list of envoy nominees.
Inter-party Women Alliance (IPWA), a network of female politicians, has said that
the nomination was made against the spirit of the new constitution. It has demanded the government to come up with a new list of envoy nominees with one-third women candidates.
The government had nominated 21 enjoys last week for various countries out of which only three were women, which is only 14.21 percent. The constitution has ensured one-third representation of women in all state mechanisms.
“This is not the first time the government has made a gender-discriminatory decision by going against the constitutional provision,” said Sashi Shrestha, president of IPWA and the leader of UCPN (Maoist) leader.
Shrestha added the discrimination was not limited in the envoy nomination process alone.
“Even the government that was formed after the promulgation of the new constitution does not have one-third female ministers in the Cabinet,” she said.
IPWA has warned of a protest if the government did not come up with a gender-balanced nomination at the earliest.
“If this trend of side-lining women continues we will be forced to take to the streets against our own parties,” Shrestha said.
