The fair is being organised jointly by the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (Fhan), Federation of Nepal Gold & Silver Dealers’ Association (Fenegosida) and Federation of Nepal Gold Silver Gem and Jewellery Associations.
According to the organizers, the expo is expected to boost the presence of the sector in both the domestic and international markets.
Expo coordinator Ramesh Maharjan said Tuesday that the exhibition would help to promote the country’s jewellery business. According to him, traders will be exhibiting ornaments made of rare gems like tourmaline that is found mainly in the Everest region,” he said.
As per the organisers, there will be 59 stalls displaying various types of jewellery products. Among them, six stalls have been booked by foreign exhibitors.
“Traders from the Saarc countries, China, Thailand, Japan and a number of European countries have shown interest in participating in the expo,” said the organisers.
Modern equipment used in manufacturing ornaments and valuable accessories will be additional attractions at the expo. Fenegosida President Mani Ratna Shakya said that they were planning to promote fusion type jewellery and ornaments through the exhibition.
“As Nepali jewellery has not been able to find many buyers in the international market due to its traditional look, we plan to study how we can modify the manufacturing process,” he said.
Bimal Nepal, director of the Trade and Export Promotion Centre, said that domestic gems had not been able to contribute much to value addition.
“Traders need to focus on developing high quality gems from locally mined gemstones instead of exporting them to foreign countries,” he said.
