The residents of Khalanga are at high risk of floods and landslides as the embankment construction works have been affected by rise in water levels in Mahakali River.
Mukesh Pathak, an engineer at the Mahakali River Control Project, told the Post that the incessant rainfall has halted the construction works for the past several days.
According to the project, the embankment construction was delayed due to the devastating earthquake of April 25 and blockade. The continuous rainfall since mid-May has increased the water levels in the river. Especially people living near Bangabagad are at higher risk of floods. “The workers are constructing a foundation from the river bank here,” said Pathak.
The construction companies, which missed the deadlines in the previous years, said they cannot work at package Number 1, 5 6, 7 and 8 due to rise in water levels in the river.
Local Ram Singh Karki of Bangabagad said the floods will erode the land during the monsoon. “The Indian authorities have already constructed embankments on their side. However, we are forced to live under constant fear of floods and landslides on this side during the monsoon,” said Karki. A massive Mahakali flood two years ago had killed nearly a dozen people.
