Twenty five earthquake-displaced families from Lachyang VDC in Nuwakot have urged the government to provide them land to build homes on.
They have been living in temporary shelters at Siurtar in Bidur Municipality-1 after being displaced by the earthquake of April 25, 2015.
They say the earthquake rendered their village uninhabitable and their farmland uncultivable.
“There are several large cracks throughout the village, making it unfit to build homes and to grow crops,” said Aitaman Tamang of Lachyang-7. “Besides, there is also a risk of landslide burying the village.”
The displaced families are planning to launch a campaign to draw the government’s attention towards their plight.
Another earthquake survivor Susmita Tamang said they could not plant crops this year because of the cracks in the land. “Even the water sources have dried up after the earthquake. How are we going to water our crops without water,” she said.
According to the District Administration Office, Lachyang, Kingtang, Ghyangphedi and Slame VDCs are at high risk of landslides. District Administrative Officer Khagendra Ghimire said they are planning to relocate the displaced people after evaluating the situation of the quake-affected areas. “We have been compiling field report from the affected villages. The relocation process will start after we have assessed the situation based on the report,” he said.
